Conor McGregor Presidential Run and Anti-Immigration Stance

Conor McGregor, the renowned mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, has announced his candidacy for the presidency of Ireland, positioning himself on an anti-immigration platform. The 36-year-old made this declaration on social media, notably wearing a “Make Ireland Great Again” cap, echoing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s slogan.

McGregor’s political stance includes strong opposition to the European Union’s Migration Pact. He has called for a national referendum to let Irish citizens decide on the matter, expressing concerns about what he describes as an “illegal immigration racket” affecting rural communities.

His recent visit to the White House on St. Patrick’s Day, where he met with President Trump, has further spotlighted his political aspirations. During this visit, McGregor criticized the Irish government’s immigration policies and sought support from the U.S., referring to America as Ireland’s “big sibling.”

However, McGregor’s presidential bid faces significant challenges. A 2023 poll indicated that only 8% of respondents would support his candidacy, with 89% opposing. Additionally, his anti-immigration remarks have drawn criticism from Irish leaders, who assert that his views do not represent the broader sentiments of the Irish populace.

The Irish presidency is largely a ceremonial role, with limited political power. Despite this, McGregor’s entry into the political arena has sparked discussions about immigration, national identity, and the influence of celebrity figures in politics.
