Hongkong Post to Suspend US-Bound Parcel Services Amid Tariff Dispute

Starting April 27, 2025, Hong Kong Post will halt all airmail services containing goods destined for the United States, following the immediate suspension of surface mail. This decision responds to new U.S. tariffs and the elimination of the “de minimis” exemption, which previously allowed tax-free entry for goods under $800.

The U.S. plans to impose a 120% tariff on small parcels from Hong Kong beginning May 2, 2025. Hong Kong Post has criticized these measures as “unreasonable” and refuses to act as a tariff collector for the U.S.

Only mail containing documents will remain unaffected. This suspension is expected to disrupt e-commerce operations, particularly for platforms like Shein and Temu, which rely on affordable international shipping.

In 2024, trade between Hong Kong and the U.S. was valued at approximately $34 billion, highlighting the potential economic impact of these postal restrictions.
