Greenland’s Tourism Boom: New Airport and Global Attention Drive Visitor Surge

Greenland is experiencing a notable surge in tourism, attributed to heightened global attention and improved accessibility. This uptick follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in the island and the inauguration of a new international airport in Nuuk, the capital.

The opening of Nuuk’s airport on November 28, 2024, marked a significant milestone, transforming it into Greenland’s first civilian transatlantic hub. This development has paved the way for direct flights from major cities, including upcoming routes from New York.

Additional international airports are under construction in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq, further enhancing Greenland’s connectivity.

Local tour operators have reported a substantial increase in bookings, with three-quarters noting a rise in the three months following the airport’s opening.

This growth is expected to bolster Greenland’s economy, reducing its reliance on the fishing industry by diversifying into tourism and mining sectors.

However, this rapid expansion has sparked discussions among the Greenlandic Inuit population regarding environmental impacts and the potential influence of foreign entities.
